I like to think of myself as an ‘it’s never too late’ kinda person – it’s never too late to change your career path, it’s never too late to learn a new language, it’s never too late to move to a new country and you can call me crazy or delusional all you want, but to me, that’s taking a chance and being optimistic about life and its path. Big decisions aside, there are so many things to experience whilst you’re young, should the opportunity present itself or if life allows it to happen. As we get older, there is less time to make plans due to marriages, children etc and then there’s also your busy job, which gives you less free time to do what you really want and also, as age increases, your memory decreases and physically, your body slows down. Some of you’s reading this may laugh at me, but there is nothing worse than not experiencing what you really wanted to and regretting it. My advice will always be ‘enjoy every moment of fun while you can and challenge what each decade has in store for you’. That said, here’s 15 experiences to have whilst you’re young…..
1) Take up a sporting hobby
Healthy activities are both exhilarating and confidence boosting at the same time. And if it’s a team sport, the likelihood of meeting new people and making friends is an extra bonus.
2) Lone travel
As much as this may scare you and the thought of boredom comes up in your mind first, travelling alone is probably one of the best things I have ever done because it really challenges you to experience something new by yourself.
3) Be a children lover
Spending time with children, especially those who look up to you is very rewarding. They think adults are super cool and for you, their positivity will always make you smile.
4) Learn a new language
This isn’t an easy thing to do, especially from scratch, but if you took up on a language in school, i.e French or Spanish, why not pick it back up again? If you’ve already got it, use it to enhance the skills you already have.
5) Do something scary
As already mentioned, our physical ability will wear down as we age, so if swimming with sharks or skydiving is something you’ve always wanted to do, but scares you, just do it. Fond memories of the experience is better than regret.
6) Move to a new city/country
If I could turn back time, this would definitely be one of things I’d do. Experiencing a new place, having a brand new address, meeting new people, eating different foods, having a new outlook on life – if you’re brave enough, do it! And if it all goes Pete Tong, you can always move back.
7) Do something for charity
Is there something you care about a lot or feel strongly towards? Why not give something back by doing something good, because doing something good is hugely rewarding and inspiring for others too.
8) Learn how to play a musical instrument
You may have probably played some sort of instrument in your life before, but maybe didn’t enjoy it as much? Perhaps, the violin was too advanced or the piano wasn’t your cup of tea, but maybe the guitar or a flute might be something you’d like, you’ll never know if don’t explore it.
9) Specialise in one dish
If there is a particularly dish you really love eating, why not try and make it yourself and make it unique to you. Create your own recipe and specialise in it, have friends over, cook it for them, keep improving on it and make it your own unique recipe. Don’t forget to name it too!
10) Go on as many girly holidays as you can
People come and go all the time, friendships need to be nurtured and what’s a better way to allow them to thrive than to go away on trips together and make memories. It’s healthy to be able to experience things with others and those times build your future.
11) Have an obsession
Now, this doesn’t mean one of those crazy, stalkerish ones, but become obsessed with something that you love. For example, mine is make up and yes, at times, it can get rather out of hand, but I wouldn’t want it any other way. I am proud of my collection and if you have something you love, be obsessed with it.
12) Travel somewhere far, far away
We all know travelling is expensive, but it is undoubtedly, one of the most fulfilling experiences we will ever have. So while you can, grab a friend or go on your own, travel to somewhere far and exotic. There is nothing better than immersing yourself in to the culture and learning all about the people, the food and the history.
13) Hire a photographer and get lots photos taken of yourself
Inevitably, we all age, wrinkles and lines are a thing guys, there’s no escaping it. We are all beautiful, but we will never get younger – capture your youth while you can and I don’t mean those, stern, strictly orchestrated shots, go for something candid and natural.
14) Get a taste of the great outdoors
Admittedly, this is something I am yet to do – although, there are plans to go camping next summer. Some people are naturally adventurous and forever climbing mountains and hiking in jungles. The thought of going somewhere with barely any phone signal terrifies, yet excites me at the same time, but hey, at least I will be able to say I done it even if it doesn’t turn out to be something I like.
15) Work for someone that inspires you
Okay, so this one may not always be as easy, but if there is someone that you admire in your current job, why not ask if they can give you some guidance on development or even better, see if there are any projects you can work together on. Gaining an extra set of skills is always a good thing.
I hope this post has given you some inspiration to experience new things and do let me know if you have any recommendations too.
