Tips For Applying The Perfect Foundation

how to apply foundation correctly

When it comes to foundation selection and application, there are three things to consider – the texture, the coverage and the finish. Alongside these, skin type, skin texture and what we use prior to foundation application is important in achieving a flawless finish. Bearing in mind, we all have different skin types, so picking the right formula is all down to trialling and testing before finding the perfect match and application technique. I have tested numerous amounts of foundations and absolutely love a lot of them and I have also tried a ton of different techniques before settling with what I believe suits me and my skin type and the foundation itself. In today’s post, I am sharing some tips on how to apply the perfect foundation and some of my recent favourite products.

Texture, Coverage and Finish

Number one tip for foundation selection is to know what texture, coverage and finish you like and what suits your skin type. I personally prefer liquid texture foundations with a high coverage and a matte finish. Because of my oily skin type, liquid gently nourishes my skin, and sticks to skin nicely without being too over cakey. Having a high coverage ensures it stays put all day without me having to add more product and as much as I love a dewy finish, matte finishes suit my skin type better. Of course, if you have drier skin, silk and dewy finishes will suit your skin nicely.

Application

I have tried a number of different application techniques, and the best tip I can give is to not overload your brush or sponge with product, rather so, apply in smaller amounts and build up. Your foundation shouldn’t look obvious and should still look like skin. Work in thin layers and allow room for powder and concealer, the last thing you want is your foundation to look cakey and overdone. Good skincare is also key to achieve a smooth and flawless base, if you find that your foundation doesn’t look as good, or it’s patchy, take a look at the products you are applying beforehand. Ensuring that your skincare is working for your skin type and using a good primer is key for smoothing out your complexion prior to foundation application.

Current Favourites

As mentioned above, I always find prepping the skin is key to achieving a flawless base. When I’m preparing for a big event or just fancy a treat, I will use a face mask beforehand and my current favourite is the Temple Spa Trufflesque Mask. It’s a gorgeous, gel textured face mask with all the plumping, brightening and firming properties leaving my skin nourished and radiant ready for my make-up base. Primer is another must, the GOSH Primer Plus+ Skin Adapter Chameleon adapts and evens out my skin tone so foundation can glide on smoothly. Choosing foundations can somewhat be a strenuous task, so it’s always good to have a few choices and shades for all occasions. On my current most-loved list is the PUR Minerals 4-in-1 Love Your Selfie Foundation for every day wear, this instantly corrects and conceals and comes in 100 universal shades, so there’s definitely a shade for everyone. The Lumene Invisible Illumination Instant Glow Fresh Skin Tint, I love for days when I need a glow, but don’t want full-on coverage. It’s a make-up/skincare hybrid and works very well for those who only want a medium/sheer base. Tropic’s Beauty Booster Sheer Foundation is my go-to for super light coverage, making it great for holidays, especially as it contains SPF too. Lastly, Physicians Formulas The Healthy Foundation SPF20 is my favourite for when I’ve either fake tanned or when I have a natural tan from holidays as it blends well in to my skin and doesn’t need a lot to give me a medium coverage finish.
